چکیده

In this paper, we discuss the state of the art of (mobile) multi-hop ad hoc networking with the aim to present the current status of the research activities and identify the consolidated research areas, with limited research opportunities, and the hot and emerging research areas for which further research is required. We start by briefly discussing the MANET paradigm, and why the research on MANET protocols is now a cold research topic. Then we analyze the active research areas. Specifically, after discussing the wireless-network technologies, we analyze four successful ad hoc networking paradigms, mesh networks, opportunistic networks, vehicular networks, and sensor networks that emerged from the MANET world. We also present an emerging research direction in the multi-hop ad hoc networking field: people centric networking, triggered by the increasing penetration of the smartphones in everyday life, which is generating a people-centric revolution in computing and communications. © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Mobile ad hoc networking: imperatives and challenges

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) represent complex distributed systems that comprise wireless mobile nodes that can freely and dynamically self-organize into arbitrary and temporary, ‘‘ad-hoc’’ network topologies, allowing people and devices to seamlessly internetwork in areas with no pre-existing communication infrastructure, e.g., disaster recovery environments. Ad hoc networking concept is no...

A Content-Centric Architecture for Green Networking in IEEE 802.11 MANETs

In this paper we aim to demonstrate that the emerging paradigm of content-centric networking conceived for future Internet architectures can be also beneficial from the energy efficiency point of view. The reference scenario to prove this statement is a Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) characterized by dynamic topology and intermittent connectivity. We design CHANET, a content-centric MANET that r...

Congestion control in named data networking - A survey

As a typical Information Centric Networking, Named Data Networking (NDN) has attracted wide research attentions in recent years. NDN evolves today’s host-centric network architecture TCP/IP to a data-centric network architecture. It turns the end-to-end connection-oriented transport of TCP/IP into receiver-driven connectionless transport. Compared with the traditional TCP/IP networking, the tra...

People-centric sensing in assistive healthcare: Privacy challenges and directions

As the domains of pervasive computing and sensor networking are expanding, there is an ongoing trend towards assistive living and healthcare support environments that can effectively assimilate these technologies according to human needs. Most of the existing research in assistive healthcare follows a more passive approach and has focused on collecting and processing data using a static-topolog...

Mobile Ad Hoc Networking: An Essential Technology for Pervasive Computing

In the near future, a pervasive computing environment can be expected based on the recent progresses and advances in computing and communication technologies. Next generation of mobile communications will include both prestigious infrastructured wireless networks and novel infrastructureless mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). A MANET is a collection of wireless nodes that can dynamically form a n...
